Conversation – Structural Engineer

As Massey Engineering firm grows and expands its capabilities, we sat down with Fedora Nwachukwu, who joined the team in October 2022 to talk about her career and her experience working with the team.

Doing the Work She Always Wanted

Fedora has worked in multiple engineering roles in Columbia, SC, throughout her career. But she’s returned to what she enjoys most at Massey Engineering.

“Structures had always been my first love.”

She came on board after working for larger firms, primarily in civil engineering roles.

“My first job out of college was roadway design,” Fedora said.

She also briefly worked in the nuclear sector. Fedora said working at a smaller firm like Massey Engineering was a shift, but it’s one she’s relished.

In previous roles, Fedora worked on one part of a project and then passed it along to whoever was responsible for the next phase. She rarely saw the outcome of the work she created.

Now, she can work on a project and see it built within two weeks.

“It was a very full circle moment to see how all the little parts I work on connect for an entire building,” Fedora said.

Working on residential projects has been a new experience for Fedora as well. She’s also interacting with clients much more.

“There’s a lot more direct feedback,” she said.

Fedora explained that she faces new challenges, like balancing aesthetics and structural engineering functionality.

And now, she gets to see her designs built and put to use, which has created a whole new level of satisfaction with her work.

“When you see it out in the field, it makes it real,” Fedora said. “It’s a real project affecting real people and they’re getting use out of it. And that’s really satisfying.”

A Culture Change

Coming from larger engineering firms, Fedora said there have been some notable differences in her work environment.

She enjoys hearing music while in the office and working in a more collaborative space, which has allowed her to connect with people with different backgrounds in the industry.

She knew she would have things to learn, but the Massey team has helped her get up to speed.

“There’s so many things I’ve learned that aren’t just job related that makes my experience here fun,” Fedora said.

She’s also noticed a different approach to working with clients. Fedora noted the Massey team’s construction consulting approach allows for the ability to shift and develop unique solutions to meet client needs.

“What I have seen so far is a higher level of care,” she said. “There’s a lot of flexibility there that I hadn’t expected or seen before.”

You Can Work with Fedora and the Rest of the Team

Massey Engineering is taking on a different approach to engineering and design. Just like Fedora said, we work closely with clients, we’re realistic about what’s feasible, and our focus is on putting them in a position to have a project that works for their needs and budget.

If this sounds like your kind of thing, send your resume to us. We’d love to see if you’re a good fit.
